When to Take Off Winter Tires in Ontario?

The short answer

When to take off winter tires? Once daytime highs in the GTA stay above 7 degrees Celsius, usually around April. That is the same 7 degree rule that told you to put them on, read in reverse. Wait until the warm days are steady, keep them on through your insurer's discount window, then swap and store them, because running winter tires into summer wears them out fast.

Putting winter tires on gets all the attention, but taking them off at the right time matters just as much. Pull them too early and a late cold snap catches you out; leave them on too long and the summer heat quietly destroys them. Here is when to take off winter tires in the GTA, how the insurance dates and studded rules fit in, and how to store the set so it is ready next fall.

When to take off winter tires in the GTA?

When daytime highs settle above 7 degrees Celsius and stay there, which in the GTA is usually sometime in April. Winter tires use a soft compound built for the cold, so once the roads warm up that softness works against you: the tires wear faster, feel vague and stop longer on hot pavement. Do not chase the first warm afternoon in March, because a cold snap can still bring ice, but once the forecast highs are reliably in the double digits, it is time. That is really all that when to take off winter tires, or when do winter tires come off, comes down to: the thermometer, not the calendar.

What is the reverse 7-degree rule?

The same rule you used in the fall simply runs backwards. Below about 7 degrees Celsius winter rubber grips better than all-season rubber; above it, all-season rubber is the better tool and winter rubber starts to suffer. So the trigger to take them off is the mirror of the trigger to put them on. The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada builds its guidance on that 7 degree line, and it works in both directions. When people ask when to take off snow tires, this is the answer, since snow tire and winter tire mean the same thing.

How early can you take winter tires off?

Not as early as the first warm day tempts you. March in the GTA still throws cold snaps and the odd ice storm, so pulling your winter tires in early March to beat the crowd can leave you on all-season rubber for a genuinely dangerous morning. The safer read is to wait until the overnight lows stop dipping toward freezing and the daytime highs are steady in the double digits, which is usually April. If you claim the insurance discount, that later date also keeps you inside your insurer's window. Patience here costs nothing and buys you the last few icy mornings of the season.

When do winter tires have to come off for the insurance discount?

Keep them on until your insurer's window closes. Ontario insurers that offer a winter tire discount set a qualifying period, and many require the tires on through to around April 1, so taking them off in mid-March to beat the rush can cost you the discount for that year. Check your own insurer's end date before you book the spring swap, and match it. You can weigh the discount against the season with our insurance savings estimator, and our guide to the Ontario winter tire insurance discount has the details.

When do studded tires have to be off in Ontario?

Earlier than you might store a normal set, and only in the north. Where studded tires are allowed, which is Northern Ontario only, they must be off by May 31 each year. For a GTA-registered vehicle studded tires are not permitted at all, as we cover in are studded tires legal in Ontario. So when do winter tires come off in BC? On April 30, the end of the designated-highway season, a later date than the GTA's. Ontario sets no legal date for regular winter tires, so the insurer window and the 7 degree rule are what guide GTA drivers.

How do you store winter tires until next season?

Store them clean, cool and dark, and they will last longer. Wash off the road salt and grime first, then keep the set somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight and away from ozone sources like electric motors. Tires on their own rims are best stacked flat or hung; tires off their rims should stand upright and be rotated occasionally so they do not deform. This is where the off rims vs on rims question actually matters, because a set on rims is both easier to store and quicker to swap. We cover life and storage in more depth in how long winter tires last.

What happens if you leave winter tires on for summer?

You pay for it in tread and grip. In warm weather a winter tire's soft compound wears out much faster, up to 60 percent faster than it would in the cold, so a set you leave on all summer may not have the tread to grip next winter when you need it. On top of that they stop longer on hot dry roads, use more fuel and run louder. We put real numbers on that trade in can you use winter tires in summer. The short version: take them off, store them, and they are ready to protect you again in November.
