Are Studded Tires Legal in Ontario?
Are studded tires legal in Ontario? Only in Northern Ontario, and only from September 1 to May 31. For a vehicle registered in the Greater Toronto Area, or anywhere in Southern Ontario, studded tires are not allowed, with a narrow exception for drivers visiting from out of province. So for almost every GTA driver the practical answer is no, and a modern studless winter tire is the right choice instead.
Studded tires promise extra bite on ice, so GTA drivers reasonably ask whether they are even allowed here. The short version is that Ontario splits the province in two: the north can use them, the south cannot. Are studded tires legal in Ontario?
Only in part of the province. Studded tires are legal in Ontario for vehicles registered in Northern Ontario, and prohibited for vehicles registered in Southern Ontario, which includes the entire Greater Toronto Area. The split is set out in Ontario's Highway Traffic Act and its tire regulation. So the honest answer to can you have studded tires in Ontario depends on where your vehicle is registered, not just where you happen to be driving. For the GTA, the default answer is no.
Where in Ontario are studded tires allowed?
In the designated northern districts, and nowhere else for resident vehicles. The studded tires Ontario permits are limited to the north, named district by district: Algoma, Cochrane, Kenora, Manitoulin, Nipissing, Parry Sound, Rainy River, Sudbury, Thunder Bay and Temiskaming. A vehicle registered in any of those areas may run studded tires in season. If you split your time between a northern cottage and the GTA, what matters is where the vehicle is registered, not where it spends the winter.
When can you have studded tires on, and when must they come off?
From September 1 to May 31 each year in the north. That window is when studded tires are legal for northern-registered vehicles, and outside it they must come off. So the answer to when do studded tires have to be off in Ontario is by June 1, and northern police services issue yearly reminders to remove them by May 31. The dates track the real winter season up north, where studs earn their keep on long stretches of ice and hard-packed snow.
Can GTA drivers use studded tires at all?
Not on a GTA-registered vehicle. Southern Ontario, which includes the GTA, does not allow studded tires for resident vehicles. The one exception is a driver visiting from out of province, typically for less than 30 days, or a Northern Ontario resident passing through. Are studded tires legal in other provinces?
Rules vary a lot across Canada, which is why the question comes up so often. Quebec allows studded tires from October 15 to May 1. Alberta allows them province-wide with no seasonal restriction. British Columbia permits them from October 1 to April 30. So if you are asking are studded tires legal in Alberta, are studded tires legal in Quebec, or are studded tires legal in BC, the answers are yes, yes and yes, each on its own dates. Ontario is the outlier that splits legality by region.

What changed with Ontario's studded tire rules?
The rule modernized which studs are legal to sell, not who can use them. Ontario updated its tire regulation, O Reg 625, to permit newer studded tire designs, the kind with more but lighter studs that grip ice well while meeting pavement-wear tests. The change matters for what is on the shelf, not for where you can run it. The regional split stands: Northern Ontario yes, Southern Ontario and the GTA no. So the modernization does not open the door for GTA drivers to fit studded winter tires.
Why are studded tires restricted in Southern Ontario?
The usual explanation is road wear. Metal studs chew up pavement over time, and Southern Ontario's busy, heavily salted highways are cleared far more often than remote northern roads, so drivers here see much less of the bare glare ice where studs actually help. Weigh the pavement damage against that limited benefit and the province landed on a regional split rather than a blanket allowance. The north, with long stretches of ice and lighter traffic, keeps studded tires; the dense, well-plowed south does not. It is the same logic that pushed tire makers to develop studless winter tires that grip ice without the metal.
What should GTA drivers use instead of studded tires?
A modern studless winter tire, which is what most northern drivers now choose too.
